South County Recreational Soccer Program

SCAA Recreation program is one of the fastest growing recreational programs in Northern Virginia. Our volunteer based program provides a fun and safe environment for children of all experience levels ages 3 and up to enjoy the beautiful game of soccer. Recreation soccer is not about winning! The emphasis is on participation, learning and acquiring life skills that will go a long way on and off the pitch. Providing great value, with fields conveniently located within the South County/Fairfax Station/Lorton area, SCAA has a program that is ideal for your child regardless of their level of play. We have an excellent coaching staff, led by our Recreational Director, Alex Pinto.  Our coaching staff is readily available to support the coaches and managers with the administration of the teams.

Juniors/Pre- Travel Program

The SCAA Juniors/Pre-Travel Soccer Program for boys and girls is a unique experience for our young players to benefit from our professional technical staff in a FUN, player development focused environment. Through developmentally appropriate activities, free play and fun games, our Juniors will learn basic techniques in dribbling, passing and receiving. The Juniors Program (For players born between January 1, 2010 - December 31, 2014) is intended for those children more seriously focused on soccer, and that are willing to commit to additional training session during the week to get our boys and girls ready to participate in our U9 travel program for Fall 2020. Typically, a player commits to a full seasonal year with the program, including the primary fall and spring seasons.

Our training sessions (8 sessions in fall, 8 sessions in spring) will focus on each players technical/ skills development. At this time in their development, our young players are in the “golden age” of acquiring information. It is essential that we use this time to develop their technical ability, so they will be prepared to learn the tactical component of the game when they compete at the older age groups.

A player focuses approach to youth soccer, emphasis is development over winning. “Winning is important, it’s a soccer game and you play to win, but the most important part in youth especially at the younger ages is to have coaches understand and focus on development and on teaching and not the weekend game.” Claudio Reyna, New York City Sporting Director- Major League Soccer & former US National Team member.

NANO ACADEMY (U3 AND U4)

The Nano Academy is a high-energy program introducing children to fundamental soccer principles, such as using your feet, dribbling, and spatial awareness. Through fun games, songs, and positive reinforcement, our Nano's will begin to experience the joy of playing soccer and being active. We concentrate on using creative and imaginative games that will help unlock their interest for the game while creating an environment that allows for building an active and energetic Nano. The Nano Academy program also highlights a positive character trait each session such as respect, teamwork, and appreciation. Nano Academy will expose your child to the fun of soccer and provide the foundation needed to get started in the sport.

The Nano Academy will run for 6 weeks on Friday evenings at South County Middle School.

Micro Academy (U5 and U6)

The Micro Academy introduces the game to our youngest players. Each session is split into training and games. The focus of our Micro Academy is to provide a development program that will focus on mastery of the ball through technical development. The U5 to U6 developing years are fundamentally important to engage the players comfort with ball at foot and start building self confidence moments. Balancing friendships on and off the pitch and gradually introducing technical components to the game in a fun and enjoyable environment is a key to our Micro Academy program at South County. At the beginning of each practice or game day session all participants will come together for a demonstration of a skill set that the South County technical training staff will be working on for the session. Following the demonstration, players will return to their fields to execute the sessions with the support of parent volunteer coaching staff.  The skill set will be developed and advance through the session and the players will build on the concept as they approach a small sided scrimmage during the last portion of the training session. After the players have had an opportunity to practice the skill set, they will generally move to small sided games.

U5 and U6 will play 3 v 3 with no keepers.  Practice one day a week and games are on Saturday Morning.

Volunteer Opportunities

Coaching

South County relies heavily on volunteer coaches to make the recreation program a success. We will provide coaching education sessions and licensing courses during the year. Each recreation coach will also receive a complimentary coaching shirt that needs to be worn to practices and games.

Refereeing

South County needs volunteers to ref some games this season. If you are interested in refereeing some games this year we would greatly appreciate your assistance. We will provide referee education sessions and licensing courses during the year.
